Our beautiful island
It's time to enjoy the Aegean sky. Welcome to Astypalaia.
Astypalaia (or Astypalea or Astipalaia, Αστυπάλαια) is a Greek island with 1.270 residents (2011 Census). It belongs to the Dodecanese, an island group of twelve major islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea.
The coasts of Astypalea are rocky with many small pebly beaches. A small band of land of roughly 60 metres, almost separates the island in two sections. The capital of the island is Astypalea or Hora, as it is called by the locals.
Settlements
Apart from Chora, which is the capital, there is another village called Analipsi (formerly named Maltezana or Martizana) and is ten kilometers from Chora. In Maltezana, is the airport of the island. During the summer months, Livadi is also a seaside settlement located a short distance from Chora. Another tiny settlement is located on the North East of the island and is called Vathi.
Sights
The most important attraction is the castle of Astropalia, which is a remnant of the Venetian domination. On the outskirts of the castle is the famous church of Panagia Portaitissa, which celebrates on August 15th. At its feast, a free dinner is offered to everyone, with a first dish of the island's specialties, the famous Lamprian (a lamp stuffed with rice, liver and herbs). Also well-preserved windmills are the trademark of the island. It is also worth visiting the castle of Agios Ioannis as well as the two caves of the island with stalactites and stalagmites. In Chora you will find the Archaeological Museum, with few but exceptional exhibits.
Entertainment
Although Astypalea is a small island, it offers a rich nightlife to its guests. Several bars, taverns, traditional cafes and natural dozens of taverns with fresh and cheap fish. Fun in Astypalaia usually keeps up to sunrise. They even enjoy having fun after going to the castle to enjoy the magical spectacle of the sun rising through the sea.
“During more than 25 years I stay in traditional houses twice a year in Drouga‘s Apartments in Astypalaea. However, new and modern rooms have been added in the complex recently that provide the visitors with a variety of choices. I have taken many friends with me on different occasions. A proof that I love to […]
